excessive but I have only reduced this by taking out the two centre lavatories in the first and second composite and the second lavatory in the brake van composite. When on a visit to Canton some time ago I spoke to Mr Kwong, the Chief Engineer of the Canton Hankow on the subject and he told me that it was very important to give reserved accommodation for women in the ratio of about 1 to 4. I would therefore propose

to reserve these carriages (second and third class composite) for women for whom onellavatory would be quite sufficient.

The heading at the North Side has now got very near the horizontal portion at the summit of the Tunnel. I have gone into the question with Mr Waite of continuing these grades till the headings meet and the conclusion arrived at was that owing to the water it will be better to do so rather than try and drive the heading on the level.

The heading from the North Side being much in advance of that from the South Side the junction will be much nearer the southern end of the level portion. When widening out the bottom will be lowered. The length of this level portion is shown on section as six hundred feet and I think under the circumstances might be reduced to not less than two hundred and fifty feet. Please let me know if you approve of this.

Yours truly,

(sd) G.W.Eves

Chief Resident Engineer.
